The Ministry of Finance in Brazil has blocked 1,812 more unlicensed websites as part of its ongoing campaign against illegal gambling. As the nation gets ready for the debut of its regulated gaming industry in January 2025, this action brings the total to over 5,000 prohibited websites.
The decree, the third significant site-blocking attempt of the year, was issued by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA). Beginning on October 11, the initial wave targeted 2,040 venues, including well-known operators like Tabcorp and Boylesports. By October 31, 1,400 more had been barred. To guarantee compliance, telecommunications regulator Anatel is now collaborating with 20,000 telecom companies.
SPA’s head, Yohan Lawrence, clarified that only 100 operators and 223 brands have provisional approval to operate under the new regulatory framework. Unlicensed operators face immediate bans and strict enforcement measures.
Protecting Consumers and Welfare
Additional precautions have been prompted by worries about the societal impact of online gambling. The Federal Supreme Court recently outlawed betting associated with social funding and gambling ads directed towards children. After it was revealed that 20% of the Bolsa Família welfare program’s funds were used for gambling, these regulations went into force right away.
By December 2024, the government also intends to complete the compliance assessment for authorized operators. When the legal system is fully functional, violators run the risk of being shut out of the market.
