Tropicana Casino Demolition Spurs Hotel Price Surge in Las Vegas

Visitors eager to witness the demolition of the historic Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas will need to pay top dollar for the privilege. As the iconic casino is set for implosion on October 9 at 2:30 a.m., nearby hotels are experiencing a surge in demand. Casinos.com reports that neighboring properties are rapidly selling out, with room rates skyrocketing as guests hope to catch a glimpse of the demolition. The event promises more than just a collapse, featuring a drone display and a fireworks show orchestrated by the world-famous Grucci family.

Hotel Prices Skyrocket as Demolition Nears

Las Vegas has a long history of demolishing its casinos to make way for new developments. The Tropicana, however, is being demolished to clear space for a new stadium for the Oakland Athletics baseball team. Hotels with views of the event are charging premium prices. For instance, MGM Grand is now asking over $1,780 for a suite on October 8-9, with standard rooms sold out. This marks a huge jump from rates that started as low as $59 just a week earlier.

Other properties with prime views, such as Mandalay Bay, Delano, Luxor, Park MGM, and Aria, also began selling out last week. Hotels further from the Tropicana, like Vdara, are seeing prices more than double, with rates soaring to $749 per night for the event. Even Excalibur and Oyo saw price bumps, with Excalibur’s rates increasing from $21 to $210 on “Implosion Tuesday.”

The Tropicana’s demolition is part of a broader expansion along the Las Vegas Strip. Recent developments include the $3.7 billion Fontainebleau opening last year and the addition of T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium, which have brought new crowds for hockey and football. As the Strip grows, Las Vegas continues to evolve, making way for new attractions while saying farewell to its old landmarks.
