Singapore has changed leadership at the Gambling Regulatory Authority, with Hoong Wee Teck taking over as chairman from April 1. The appointment keeps a senior figure with a long law enforcement background at the head of the regulator that oversees all forms of gambling in the city-state.
Good to Know
The handover became effective on Wednesday, April 1, with Hoong Wee Teck stepping up from deputy chairman to chairman of the Gambling Regulatory Authority. Official Singapore records now list him as chairman of the board.
Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs said Hoong brings 38 years of service in the Singapore Police Force, including 11 years as commissioner. That background gives the regulator a chairman with deep experience in enforcement and public sector oversight at a time when Singapore keeps tight control over gambling activity.
Tan Tee How is the one leaving the role after serving as chairman since 2018. The ministry thanked him for his contributions and said he helped guide a broader transition in the regulator role. Under his leadership, the old casino-focused structure gave way to a wider national gambling regulator.
That part matters in Singapore. GRA is no longer limited to casino oversight alone. The ministry said the authority was transformed from a casino regulator into the national regulator for all forms of gambling in the country. It also credited Tan with helping the agency maintain strong governance while keeping gambling free from criminal influence and reducing harm to society.
Singapore remains one of the most tightly controlled gambling markets in Asia, with a casino duopoly made up of Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. Against that backdrop, the chairman role carries weight far beyond land-based casino oversight.
