Brazilian police have taken influencer and DJ Maria Vitória Lima, widely known as Latina Gold, into custody after linking her to an online gambling promotion scheme. The Civil Police of Piauí say she earned nearly BRL 14 million in two years by pushing the Fortune Tiger slot through illegal platforms.
Good to Know
Investigators explained that Latina Gold and her husband, Domingos Ferreira, allegedly ran the operation with two other influencers. Ferreira is accused of moving about BRL 700,000 himself through similar tactics. Together, the group is suspected of coordinating a large-scale money laundering and illegal betting operation.
Police allege the influencers tricked viewers by showing fabricated victories using fake profiles. According to the Department for the Repression of Cybercrime, these staged results encouraged unsuspecting followers to gamble on sites that are not licensed in Brazil.
One follower reportedly lost BRL 400,000 after being persuaded by such promotions. The authorities emphasized that these schemes prey on consumer trust and funnel funds into criminal networks.
Alisson Landim, delegate at the Cybercrime Department, said:
“The operation was carried out to stop consumers from being induced into error, and to curb money laundering and organized crime linked to gambling.”
Raids were conducted across Teresina, leading to the seizure of vehicles, phones, and other luxury items believed to be linked to the illegal activity. Police stressed again that only operators authorized by the Ministry of Finance can legally offer betting services in Brazil.
Latina Gold’s arrest is the latest in a string of influencer crackdowns connected to gambling ads in the country. Just weeks ago, influencer Karol Digital was detained over similar charges, and another social media figure, Raquel Brito, faced questioning related to promotions for “Tigrinho” slots.
Authorities in São Paulo also ran their “Tiger Hunting” operation, which specifically targeted illegal gambling sites. The growing wave of arrests shows Brazilian regulators are intensifying efforts against unlicensed gambling and those profiting from it.
