Atlantic City Casinos Record Best Summer Since 2012

Atlantic City just wrapped up its hottest summer run in more than ten years. Strong in-person gambling, combined with record-breaking online play, helped push New Jersey’s casinos to their best summer showing since 2012.

The summer boost reversed what had been a sluggish start to the year, giving operators a 2.8% year-over-year cushion heading into the colder months.

Good to Know

  • August in-person casino revenue climbed to $312 million, up 6.1% year over year.
  • Online gambling set a new monthly record of $248 million.
  • Total gaming revenue for the summer hit $855 million from in-person play, the best in over a decade.

Strong Numbers Across the Board

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement reported total gaming revenue of $642.2 million in August, a 15.7% jump from the year before. Of that, $312 million came from traditional casino floors, while online gambling and sports betting added nearly $330 million combined.

From June through August, the nine Atlantic City casinos generated $855 million from in-person play, up 5.5% year over year. Regulators confirmed it was the city’s strongest summer since 2012.

Digital gambling continues to be a growth engine. Internet casinos brought in a record $248 million in August, while sports betting handled $778 million, with operators keeping almost $82 million as revenue. Despite that, in-person slots and table games outpaced online for the fourth straight month.

Mark Giannantonio, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey and head of Resorts Casino Hotel, welcomed the results and said:

“We’re happy the market found some growth; it was a very good month. Hopefully it can be sustained into the fall and winter months. I’m very happy about it.”

New Jersey Casino Control Commission chairman James Plousis noted August marked the highest monthly win for Atlantic City casinos since 2012. He said:

Casino & Sports

“For the third time this year, New Jersey’s total gaming revenue surpassed $600 million in one month. Year-to-date, it surpassed $4.5 billion sooner than all prior years.”

Stockton University’s Jane Bokunewicz described the summer results as “a breath of fresh air for Atlantic City’s casino operators,” pointing out that land-based revenue from June to August beat internet gaming revenue by over $125 million.

Market Leaders

Borgata topped the in-person list with $80.2 million, followed by Hard Rock with $58.3 million and Ocean Casino at $51.1 million. Bally’s and Golden Nugget were the only casinos to report declines.

On the digital side, FanDuel (partnered with Golden Nugget) led with $57.1 million, a 38.2% increase. DraftKings (Resorts) followed at $47 million, while BetMGM (Borgata) came in at $32.5 million, up nearly 47%.
