One of the West End’s most famous landmarks is about to get a new chapter. Genting UK has announced plans to redevelop part of the historic London Trocadero into a modern casino and hospitality complex, with an opening date set for October 2026.
Good to know
The Trocadero, a Grade II-listed building on Coventry Street, has seen many lives since opening in 1896 as a grand restaurant. Over the decades it has hosted a cinema, an amusement arcade, a shopping center, and even the SegaWorld theme park during the 1990s. Now, Genting UK wants to breathe new life into the property by blending its historic character with contemporary casino entertainment.
The new casino will cover parts of the basement, ground, and first floors, with a gaming floor of up to 16,000 square feet. Back-of-house and staff facilities will be located in the basement to support the operation.
Genting intends to position the Trocadero project alongside other West End casinos, describing the area as a “London Strip.” With 24-hour operations planned, the venue will compete directly with The Hippodrome, Empire Casino Leicester Square, and Horizons Casinos. Genting already runs 28 properties across the UK, including four in Mayfair, giving the operator a strong presence in the capital.
Food and beverage options will play a major role. A ground-floor restaurant will open onto Coventry Street, while the first floor will feature a more formal dining space that can operate independently or as part of the casino experience. Additional basement facilities will cater to casino guests, making the site a multi-level leisure destination.
The redevelopment is designed as a sustainable retrofit rather than a total rebuild. Genting aims to preserve the Trocadero’s architectural façades and heritage details, while updating interiors with new shopfronts, signage, and public realm improvements in partnership with the property’s owner.
Safety and responsibility are also central to the plan. The casino will implement 24/7 CCTV, trained door staff, and a comprehensive management strategy to protect visitors and the surrounding community. Entry will be restricted to customers aged 25 and above, with Genting highlighting an emphasis on inclusivity and diverse patronage.
The company estimates the project will generate up to 350 jobs, with training and career development opportunities, particularly aimed at young people joining the hospitality industry.
