Casino revenue in Detroit saw modest growth in May 2025, with the three main operators showing a slight uptick year-over-year. However, retail sports betting continued to underperform despite a small month-over-month improvement.
Good to know
The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) released new figures detailing revenue performance from MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown. Combined, the three casinos reported $114 million in revenue for May 2025, showing a 0.7% increase from the same period in 2024.
MGM Grand Detroit brought in the highest share at nearly $53.2 million, reflecting a 2.4% year-over-year increase. MotorCity Casino generated $34.5 million, and Hollywood Casino reported $26.2 million. Compared to May 2024, MotorCity saw a slight gain of 0.6%, while Hollywood posted a marginal 0.2% decline.
When breaking down revenue by category, table games and slot machines accounted for $112.7 million in May, up 1.2% from the same month last year and 3% higher than April 2025. However, for the year-to-date period from January through May, slot and table game revenue dipped 0.2% compared to the first five months of 2024.
Casinos contributed $9.1 million in state gaming taxes in May, just $100,000 more than they paid during the same month last year. On top of that, Detroit received $13.4 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments tied to local casino operations.
While core casino revenue showed stability, retail sports betting told a different story. Adjusted gross revenue from in-person sports wagers dropped 31.1% year-over-year, landing at $1.3 million in May. The total sports betting handle for the month came in at $9.2 million.
Despite the year-over-year dip, May still performed better than April. Retail sports betting revenue increased by $964,700 compared to the previous month, showing a possible rebound after a slow start to the spring.
