Detroit Casinos Hit $114 Million in May While Betting Slips

Casino revenue in Detroit saw modest growth in May 2025, with the three main operators showing a slight uptick year-over-year. However, retail sports betting continued to underperform despite a small month-over-month improvement.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) released new figures detailing revenue performance from MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown. Combined, the three casinos reported $114 million in revenue for May 2025, showing a 0.7% increase from the same period in 2024.

MGM Grand Detroit brought in the highest share at nearly $53.2 million, reflecting a 2.4% year-over-year increase. MotorCity Casino generated $34.5 million, and Hollywood Casino reported $26.2 million. Compared to May 2024, MotorCity saw a slight gain of 0.6%, while Hollywood posted a marginal 0.2% decline.

When breaking down revenue by category, table games and slot machines accounted for $112.7 million in May, up 1.2% from the same month last year and 3% higher than April 2025. However, for the year-to-date period from January through May, slot and table game revenue dipped 0.2% compared to the first five months of 2024.

Casinos contributed $9.1 million in state gaming taxes in May, just $100,000 more than they paid during the same month last year. On top of that, Detroit received $13.4 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments tied to local casino operations.

While core casino revenue showed stability, retail sports betting told a different story. Adjusted gross revenue from in-person sports wagers dropped 31.1% year-over-year, landing at $1.3 million in May. The total sports betting handle for the month came in at $9.2 million.

Despite the year-over-year dip, May still performed better than April. Retail sports betting revenue increased by $964,700 compared to the previous month, showing a possible rebound after a slow start to the spring.
