Illinois is preparing for a leadership change at the top of its gaming regulatory body. Charles Schmadeke, who has chaired the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) for six years, will step down once his second term ends on July 1.
Good to know
Schmadeke’s departure marks the end of a two-term run leading the IGB through a critical period of growth and transformation. During his time as chairman, Illinois saw major gaming expansion, operational overhauls at the agency, and the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the board’s most recent meeting, Schmadeke closed out his time in office by overseeing the approval of several new gaming licenses and regulatory measures. He also took a moment to reflect on his service, thanking his fellow board members for their ongoing work in monitoring the state’s gambling market.
Schmadeke used the meeting to offer his parting remarks. “After two terms, it is time for me to call it a day, so in essence this is my valedictory for the Gaming Board,” he said. “The duty of the Gaming Board is to protect the integrity of gaming in Illinois and for that it has been my goal in particular but our goal in general is that gaming should benefit all of Illinois and we have always consciously attempted to assure that all Illinoisans participate in the benefits of gaming.”
Board Administrator Marcus D. Fruchter also offered praise, saying, “On behalf of myself, the Board and IGB staff, I acknowledge and thank Chairman Schmadeke for his nearly six years of dedicated and ethical service as Gaming Board Chair and his continued commitment, contributions and dedication to our State.”
Under Schmadeke’s leadership, the Illinois gaming market evolved rapidly. His term included the expansion of legalized gambling, modernization of board operations, and pandemic-related challenges that reshaped the industry’s direction. With his exit scheduled for early July, attention now turns to who will take over the position and lead the IGB into its next phase.
