Lou Garza is no stranger to big moments at the World Series of Poker, but his latest win might be the most dramatic yet. Nearly two years after earning his first bracelet—and proposing to his now-wife Carla at the same time—the Texas native returned to the WSOP stage and added another trophy to his collection. This time, he took down Event #14: $25,000 High Roller PLO/NLH Mixed, earning $1,302,233.
Garza’s comeback required more than just experience. He entered heads-up play at a heavy chip disadvantage, facing off against two-time bracelet winner Ben Lamb, who looked in full control early on. But Garza dug in and clawed his way back, sealing the win in front of the PokerGO cameras.
Good to know
- Garza now has two WSOP bracelets and nearly $4.7 million in total tournament earnings.
- The $25K mixed event drew 245 entries and paid out more than $5.7 million.
- Garza’s win pushed him into 14th place in the PokerGO Tour standings.
The field in this $25K event featured some of the most familiar names in high-stakes poker. Among those who cashed were Jason Koon, Stephen Chidwick, Dan Smith, Shaun Deeb, and Nick Schulman. The final table brought together five contenders on the fourth day, with Lamb holding a dominant chip lead.
Garza scored the first knockout with pocket kings against Brandon Mitchell, but even that left him trailing Lamb by a wide margin. Then came the hand that shifted momentum—Robert Cowen moved all-in with top set, only to see Lamb hit a straight on the river to knock him out. Shortly after, Garza eliminated Chongxian Yang with a flopped flush in PLO, setting up the heads-up clash with Lamb.
The duel that followed was a swing-heavy affair. Garza chipped away early with a strong two-pair hand in hold’em, then took the lead with a wheel straight in another NLH round. Lamb battled back during the PLO section, but Garza regained control with a gutsy bluff that forced Lamb to fold top pair. A few key pots later, Garza built a lead and never gave it back. On the final hand, he picked up pocket aces and held firm against Lamb’s shove with king-ten suited.
Garza’s payday came just short of topping his 2023 $10K PLO championship win, where he earned $1,309,232. Still, the new bracelet and seven-figure prize solidify his growing legacy. His $700K boost in PokerGO Tour points also moved him into the PGT top 15, despite this being his first qualifying cash of the season.
Lamb collected $868,140 for his runner-up finish and now has over $17.7 million in recorded tournament earnings. Despite the loss, his deep run reaffirmed his place as one of poker’s toughest competitors.
After the win, Garza did not have a dramatic proposal, but the accomplishment carried plenty of weight. Coming back from a 3:1 chip deficit against a player like Lamb? That speaks for itself.
