Betsson has officially pulled out of its planned acquisition of Holland Gaming Technology and Holland Power Gaming, choosing to focus on other business options instead. The move brings an end to a €27.5 million ($31.4 million) deal that had been in progress since early 2024.
Good to know
- Betsson will be refunded €26.7 million after the cancellation.
- Dutch regulator KSA did not approve the deal by the deadline.
- The exit will not impact Betsson’s financial results.
The agreement, announced in February 2024, was tied to regulatory approval from the Kansspelautoriteit (KSA). However, with no decision from the Dutch regulator before the agreed long-stop date, Betsson chose to walk away.
The company confirmed that the funds, minus a break fee, will be returned and that the withdrawal will not affect its consolidated income statement.
Had the deal gone through, Betsson would have re-entered the Dutch market—one it left in September 2021 just before legal iGaming launched in the country. Holland Power Gaming was set to keep developing content exclusively for Holland Gaming Technology under Betsson’s ownership.
Although Betsson had also applied for a Dutch licence, it dropped that effort in July 2023, citing long regulatory delays. The company had hoped that stepping back in 2021 would support a smoother return to the legal market later on. Operating without a licence can lead to penalties, which may impact future applications.
In related news, a March ruling from the Rotterdam District Court ordered Betsson to return over €500,000 to a player who lost money on unlicensed gambling websites. The case dated back to 2014, a period when iGaming was not legally permitted in the Netherlands. The court found Betsson responsible for reimbursing the funds.
