U.S. Gaming Revenue Hits $72 Billion in 2024, AGA Reports

Commercial gaming in the United States continued to grow in 2024, with new records set in multiple categories. From sports betting and online casinos to traditional casino floors, players across the country drove national revenue to a new high.

Good to know

  • Total commercial gaming revenue hit $72.04B in 2024, up 7.5% from the previous year.
Sports betting and iGaming were the biggest growth drivers.
28 out of 38 regulated states saw revenue increase year-over-year.

Sports betting and online casinos added fresh momentum to the U.S. gaming industry. Revenue from sports betting alone hit $13.78B, marking a 24.8% jump compared to 2023. Bettors placed over $149.9B in wagers throughout the year.

Online casinos also played a major role, particularly in the seven states where full iGaming is legal (excluding Nevada’s poker-only model). That segment generated $8.41B, rising 28.7% year-over-year — the biggest gain among all categories.

Traditional Casinos Still Dominate Total Revenue

Despite rapid digital growth, land-based casinos remained the core of the U.S. gaming market. A total of 492 commercial casino properties generated $49.89B during 2024. While the year-over-year increase was just 1%, this still accounted for nearly 70% of the entire commercial gaming market.

Nevada stayed at the top, posting $15.6B in commercial gaming revenue, a slight increase of 0.5%. Pennsylvania followed with $6.9B, and New Jersey came in third at $6.3B. Both states saw double-digit growth: 10.3% for Pennsylvania and 9% for New Jersey.

Tax revenue figures also drew attention. Pennsylvania led all states with $2.5B in commercial gaming taxes, while New York followed closely at $2.3B. Nevada was the only state to report a drop in tax revenue, dipping 0.7% to settle at $1.2B.

Smaller markets saw some of the biggest percentage increases. Washington D.C. jumped 181.7%, while Kentucky posted 148% growth. In total, 28 out of the 38 regulated jurisdictions reported annual gains.

William Miller, President and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA), praised the year’s performance and industry credibility.

“I am pleased to present State of the States 2025: The AGA Survey of the Commercial Casino Industry, the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) flagship research report on U.S. commercial gaming in 2024,” said Miller.

He added, “The unprecedented success of our industry comes as more Americans than ever before have access to, and allocate their entertainment budgets to, the legal, regulated gaming market. Last year, more than half of American adults participated in some form of gambling and 45 percent visited a casino property.”

According to Miller, the industry’s responsible practices and contributions to local economies continue to build public trust and strong relationships with lawmakers and regulators.
