Thai Cabinet to Weigh Casino Legalization as Polls Show Divided Views

The Thai cabinet is set to discuss a draft bill that could pave the way for legal casino gambling in the country, as reported by the Bangkok Post today. The discussion, initially planned for earlier in the week, was delayed due to a parliamentary censure debate and is now expected to take place on Thursday. Whether the bill makes it onto the official agenda will be at the discretion of the prime minister, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The Ministry of Finance, which prepared the proposal, argues that introducing legal casino complexes could boost the economy and increase tourism revenue. Government officials claim that feedback from an online public hearing conducted between February 28 and March 14 shows strong public support, with 80% of respondents reportedly in favor of the plan. However, opinion polls conducted separately suggest a more divided sentiment, with many concerned about the social consequences of legalized gambling.

Thailand, a country heavily dependent on tourism, is looking to formalize and regulate the gaming sector to attract foreign investment and raise tax revenue. Supporters argue that legalizing casinos would help curb illegal gambling operations and provide a new stream of income for the government. Critics, however, worry that the move would primarily benefit large corporations and international firms while increasing gambling-related social problems.

The opposition has also voiced concerns, particularly highlighting that the ruling Pheu Thai Party never included casino legalization in its campaign pledges. Additionally, there are fears that the policy could impact Thailand’s relationship with China, which has taken a strict stance against gambling and may discourage its citizens from visiting Thailand if casinos become legal.

Julapun stated that the Ministry of Finance completed the draft bill last week after gathering input from relevant agencies, all of which reportedly supported the proposal. If the cabinet gives its approval, the bill will proceed to the House of Representatives for further debate and potential passage.
