In its most recent report on U.S. commercial gaming income, the American Gaming Association (AGA) noted that 2024 was a record-breaking year. At $71.9 billion, the industry’s overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased 7.5% from $66.5 billion in 2023. This carries on the sector’s four-year run of record growth.
iGaming and Sports Betting Surge
Traditional casinos remained the biggest revenue generator, contributing $49.8 billion. However, iGaming experienced the fastest growth, surging 28.7% to $8.4 billion. Sports betting also expanded significantly, climbing 25.4% to reach $13.7 billion.
Online gaming made up 30% of total commercial gaming revenue, bringing in $21.54 billion—its highest-ever annual total. This shift underscores the increasing preference for digital gaming options among U.S. consumers.
Despite a 4.4% revenue decline, the Las Vegas Strip maintained its position as the top commercial casino market, generating $8.51 billion. Atlantic City followed with $2.84 billion. Among states, only eight saw a decline in gaming revenue, while the District of Columbia posted the highest increase, jumping 201.6% to $57.5 million.
Commercial gaming operators contributed approximately $15.7 billion in gaming taxes in 2024, reflecting an 8.5% rise from the previous year.
The industry’s record-breaking year was reinforced by a strong fourth quarter. Q4 commercial gaming revenue reached $18.6 billion, a 6.2% increase from the same period in 2023 and the highest single-quarter total on record.
All major gaming sectors posted gains. iGaming revenue rose 33.1% to $2.38 billion, sports betting increased 7.3% to $3.66 billion, and traditional casinos generated $12.6 billion, up 2.3%.
AGA President and CEO Bill Miller emphasized the industry’s expanding reach, stating, “In 2024, Americans embraced the diverse legal gaming options available to them – whether in casinos, at sportsbooks, or online – leading to another record-setting year for our industry.”
He added, “As we build on this success, the AGA remains committed to fostering additional growth that benefits consumers, operators, and communities alike.”
Miller highlighted the broader economic impact, noting, “Every dollar of gaming revenue fuels jobs, investment, and economic growth – reinforcing why the legal industry’s expansion is so important.”
With continued interest in legal gaming and rising online engagement, the industry is poised for further growth in the coming years.
