Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI) has formally launched the $100 million Owensboro Racing & Gaming facility in Owensboro, Kentucky. As it fortifies its position in Kentucky’s expanding gaming sector, the launch represents a significant turning point for CDI. With 600 historical racing machines (HRMs), a retail sportsbook, simulcast betting, and a range of eating options, the facility is a top entertainment attraction for both locals and tourists.
Economic Boost for Owensboro and Kentucky’s Horse Racing Industry
The venue is set to have a significant impact on the local economy, with the potential to attract new tourism and boost entertainment offerings in eastern Daviess County. It is also expected to contribute to the horse racing industry, helping to support purse funding for Ellis Park Racing & Gaming’s summer meet in Henderson.
Bill Carstanjen, CEO of CDI, expressed his enthusiasm about the opening, stating, “Today marks an exciting milestone for our company as we expand our footprint in western Kentucky and further strengthen our commonwealth’s signature horse racing industry. Owensboro’s newest entertainment destination will drive new tourism, entertainment, and economic opportunities in eastern Daviess County.”
Despite rainy weather on opening day, hundreds of eager patrons arrived early, excited to be part of the event. One of the first in line, Angeline Jacobs, arrived at 5:30 AM—almost six hours ahead of the ribbon-cutting ceremony. She shared her excitement, saying, “I think it’s a great thing because you don’t have to go very far for gaming—it’s just so fun and it’s right here in your backyard.”
The new venue has already had a positive effect on employment, creating 200 construction jobs and 224 permanent positions. CDI expects the Owensboro facility to be a long-term economic driver for the region, with operations running 24/7.
Steve Roof, General Manager of Owensboro Racing & Gaming, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout despite the weather, saying, “This is just a great addition to the community… our team members are the best.” Roof added, “The turnout is awesome, especially with the rain and the drizzle I thought it might be down a little bit, but it is incredible.”
Looking ahead, CDI plans to continue enhancing the venue, introducing new attractions and entertainment options modeled after its other successful gaming properties. “We’re thrilled to finally open our doors to the public and to continuously introduce exciting reasons to come back again and again,” the company stated.
