Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies to Debate Gambling Ad Ban

On Wednesday, November 27, Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies will discuss a crucial government proposal that would outlaw any sponsorships and advertising related to gambling. Supported by five congressional opposition blocs, this bill aims to address worries about the exploitation of vulnerable populations and the harm associated with gambling.

Broad Support for Gambling Restrictions

This effort has been supported by civic committees that support laws aimed at reducing the negative effects of gambling. A comprehensive federal framework is being developed by these committees, which include Addiction Prevention, Social Action, Communications, Criminal Legislation, and Families and Youth. The proposed law would establish uniform safeguards nationwide by superseding state laws.

One of the top priorities is to strengthen protections for children. The Chief Governor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, stopped issuing new gambling licenses earlier this year. This ruling came after alarming revelations that 34% of the city’s children had gambled by evading age verification procedures.

Key provisions of the bill include:

  • Prohibiting betting company logos on sports jerseys.
  • Banning gambling ads in traditional and digital media.
  • Restricting welcome bonuses on online platforms.
  • Limiting payment methods, including credit systems and social assistance cards for gambling.

The proposal has garnered support from opposition groups, including Unión por la Patria, Encuentro Federal, the Civic Coalition, and left-wing factions. However, the ruling coalition, consisting of PRO, La Libertad Avanza, and parts of the UCR, leans toward a more lenient stance. They advocate for allowing sponsorships to continue under regulated conditions.

While a minority bloc supports a broader ban on gambling promotions, their approach lacks specific implementation guidelines.

With Congress’s three-month recess starting on November 30, lawmakers face a tight timeline to debate and vote on this critical measure. Civic Committees and opposition groups are pushing to ensure the bill moves forward before the deadline.
