The 2023 World Series of Poker finally brought Alex Keating what he had long been playing for. The veteran took the top spot and his first ever bracelet in Event #94: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em, hosted at the illustrious Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas.
In what was the second to last final event of the 2023 WSOP, participation remained strong with 813 poker registration, a significant rise from last year’s count of 573. Two days of intense card play concluded with Keating securing his debut WSOP bracelet, a victorious end after his first WSOP cash-in back in 2009.
Event#94 was a playground for poker pros, with notable players such as Viktor Blom, Alex Foxen, Alex Livingston, David Peters, and Phil Laak, who all tried hard to get their 2023 bracelets.
The final table started after Punnat Punsri, a popular Thai pro, just missed out and bubbled the final table, losing to Nozomu Shimizu’s pocket Jacks.
The start of the nine-handed play saw Keating and Shimizu taking the reins, each looking like a potential winner.
In an unfortunate turn, Massoud Eskandari was the first to depart from the single-table stage, losing to Marcello Delgrosso. Jason Hickey and Christian Harder followed soon after, falling to Shimizu and Josh Reichard respectively.
Shimizu continued his domination by eliminating Reichard next, with Alexandros Kolonias exiting soon after due to a fortuitous play by Keating.
After a great run, Shimizu made his exit in third place, falling to Wei’s pocket eights. This left Keating and Wei in a head-to-head showdown, where Keating bested his opponent thereby securing his long-awaited first-ever WSOP bracelet.
