Swiss poker star Alexandre Vuilleumier dominated a competitive field of 207 entrants to secure his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) title in the $25,000 buy-in six-max no-limit hold’em event. This victory not only resulted in a notable seven-figure score of $1,215,864, but also propelled Vuilleumier’s career earnings past the $2.1 million mark.
A Stellar Year for Vuilleumier
2023 marks a victorious year for Vuilleumier as he landed two final tables and emerged victorious both times. His prior success was in a $10,150 six-max event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, where he bested an 87-entry field and pocketed $237,700. These triumphs earned Vuilleumier 1,740 Card Player Player of the Year points, catapulting him into a three-way tie for 75th place in the 2023 POY standings, alongside Giorgiy Skhulukhiya and David Yan.
Running from May 30 to June 1, the event witnessed a thrilling competition among poker veterans. Players like Justin Bonomo, Koray Aldemir, Espen Jorstad, Daniel Negreanu, Chris Brewer, Adrian Mateos, Bin Weng, Keith Lehr, Andrew Lichtenberger, Jake Schindler, and Elior Sion left their mark on the tournament but fell short of the final table.
Dramatic Heads up
In the final face-off, Joey Weissman was the first to depart after his pocket kings were defeated by Vuilleumier’s full house. Meanwhile, Ren Lin’s daring triple-barrel bluff backfired, leaving him short-stacked. Despite losing a significant chunk of his stack in a clash with Vuilleumier, Sean Winter made a remarkable recovery, doubling his stack twice.
However, Lin’s attempt with A-10 suited against Chance Kornuth’s pocket kings led to his exit in fifth place. Despite his departure, Lin secured the third place in the overall POY standings. Winter’s journey came to a halt in third place when his second pair was bested by Vuilleumier’s top pair and a higher kicker.
Vuilleumier began the heads-up play with a significant lead against Kornuth. His lead only extended when he secured a major pot with queens up against Kornuth’s third pair. In the final hand, Vuilleumier quickly called Kornuth’s all-in, and the board’s outcome favored Vuilleumier’s queen-high straight.
Although Kornuth couldn’t clinch his fourth WSOP gold bracelet, he earned a career-high payout of $751,463, bringing his total tournament earnings to over $13.3 million.
