EGBA Reports More Than 100 Million Safer Gambling Messages Sent in 2024

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has released its latest sustainability report, revealing that its members paid €3.8 billion ($4.44 billion) in taxes across Europe in 2024 and made steady progress in safer gambling efforts. The annual data, which covers online operations in the EU and UK, shows an industry working to pair growth with increased social responsibility.

Good to know

  • EGBA members sent 100 million safer gambling messages in 2024.
  • Total energy use dropped 11%, with 78% from renewable sources.
  • €735 million was invested in European sports through sponsorship and media rights.

The 2025 report shows safer gambling tools were used by nearly 27 million customers, making up 69% of all users. Half of them activated tools like deposit limits on their own. Personalized messages helped influence 42% to 46% of users flagged as higher risk, with one in five choosing to improve their protection settings afterward.

EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer said the results show members are “setting industry benchmarks for safer gambling,” though he also warned that offshore operators remain a threat to both player safety and national tax systems.

Beyond safer gambling, the report also highlights the group’s broader economic role. EGBA members contributed €735 million to sports through sponsorships, league fees, and media rights, with streaming alone making up 62% of that total. They also donated €156.8 million to charities and put €149 million toward gambling harm education, research, and treatment.

The workforce across online and land-based operations hit 62,600 people in 2024. Gender diversity held steady at 57% male and 43% female, with 89% of staff trained in responsible gambling practices.

Other trends included a 19% increase in active customer accounts, totaling 38.6 million. Most customers were male (75%), and support teams handled close to 16 million inquiries—many tied to bonus offers.

EGBA also reaffirmed support for the World Lottery Association’s Responsible Gaming Framework, where its members hold Level 3 certification. Although the report is not audited by a third party, the association said it follows thorough internal verification procedures to ensure the data’s reliability.
