Norsk Tipping is facing more heat after a major tech slip-up caused chaos for thousands of Eurojackpot players. The mistake left tens of thousands thinking they had won a prize, only to be told it was all wrong. Now, Norway’s gambling regulator is stepping in to take a closer look.
Good to know
The trouble began in June when a technical issue in Norsk Tipping’s system miscalculated prize amounts for Eurojackpot players. Roughly 47,000 people were mistakenly listed as winners. About 30,000 of them got a text or app notification telling them they had won—when they had not. Naturally, many of them contacted Lotteritilsynet directly, looking for answers.
The regulator has now confirmed that the incident broke the country’s Gambling Act. It is not stopping there either. Lotteritilsynet plans to carry out a detailed review of Norsk Tipping’s lottery operations. This includes not just Eurojackpot, but also Lotto and Vikinglotto games. Everything will be examined, from how tickets are entered to how winnings are paid.
Trust has taken a hit. Lotteritilsynet made it clear that people expect their games to be accurate and dependable. “The fact that several thousand players receive a notice of excessive winnings is clearly harmful to trust,” the authority said.
The fallout was immediate. Tonje Sagstuen stepped down as Norsk Tipping’s CEO on 30 June. The company has since started its own investigation into what went wrong. Acting CEO Vegar Strand responded by saying they were not surprised by the regulator’s ruling. He said:
“We have initiated thorough reviews with external expertise of the error situations we have had. It is not unexpected that the Norwegian Lottery Authority wants to conduct its own inspection of our lottery games, which they have notified us of today. We look forward to receiving this inspection, and see it as an important step in restoring trust in the company,”
