Casino Development Plans Released by New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen

While the race for a New York City casino license is still ongoing, potential bidders continue to reveal their ideas. One of the most anticipated proposals comes from New York Mets owner, Steve Cohen, who has teamed up with Hard Rock Entertainment for a large-scale project outside Citi Field in Queens. Last week, Cohen released more details and artistic renderings of the proposed development.

What the Project Includes

The proposal outlines a vision for transforming the area surrounding Citi Field into an entertainment hub called Metropolitan Park. The development would feature a casino, parks, restaurants, and shopping areas. Renderings show extensive green space and plans for pedestrian-friendly areas.

The project also includes significant upgrades to the surrounding infrastructure. According to AM New York, the development team proposes creating 20 acres of public parks, five acres of community athletic fields, and improvements to the Mets-Willets Point 7 train stop. Additionally, new roadways and cycling paths are planned, along with a live music venue and a “Taste of Queens” food hall.

Cohen has estimated that the project would create 23,000 jobs and involve an investment of $8 billion. The project would also establish a $163 million community impact fund to support local nonprofits in Queens.

Challenges Ahead for the Project

Although Cohen’s vision for Metropolitan Park is ambitious, obstacles remain. One major hurdle is securing a zoning change necessary for construction. In addition, some local politicians have voiced opposition to the project. A key state senator recently expressed her disapproval, which could slow down progress.

New York State is currently reviewing bids for three full-scale downstate casino licenses, with one expected to go to a New York City location. The remaining two licenses will likely go to existing gaming facilities. Cohen’s project faces competition from other major proposals, including a $12 billion Wynn casino resort plan. The granting of licenses for the state’s much sought-after casino licenses will not begin until late 2025.
