The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has announced its contributions to the state’s School Aid Fund and public programs for 2024, highlighting its efforts to regulate gaming and combat illegal gambling.
In total, $501.4 million was directed to Michigan’s School Aid Fund. Online gaming wagering taxes, including iGaming, online sports betting, and fantasy contests, accounted for the majority, bringing in $400.9 million. An additional $100.5 million came from casino wagering taxes on table games, slot machines, and retail sportsbooks.
Beyond funding education, the MGCB allocated tax revenue to several other initiatives. These included public safety programs, responsible gaming campaigns, and support for the agricultural and equine industries. One key effort, the “Don’t Regret the Bet” campaign, aimed to promote responsible gaming and even earned an Emmy Award for its impact.
In Detroit, commercial casinos contributed $264.8 million in city wagering taxes, underscoring the city’s role as a hub for gaming activity.
The MGCB also took steps to address illegal gambling across the state. In 2024, the agency seized 206 illegal machines and issued six cease-and-desist letters, relying on tips and cooperation from Michigan residents to identify unlawful operations.
Reflecting on the year, MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams shared his thoughts on the board’s accomplishments. “As we look back on another successful year, I am proud of the significant impact the Michigan Gaming Control Board continues to have on our state and its residents,” he said. “From supporting education and first responders to tackling illegal gambling, the MGCB remains steadfast in its mission to protect consumers and enhance the public good.”
Williams credited the MGCB team and Michigan’s communities for their role in this success. He emphasized the board’s commitment to maintaining a thriving, responsible gaming industry while benefiting the public.
This week, the MGCB also announced its November figures, good for total revenue of $284.3 million in the month.
