On April 28th, the Kansas Senate and House of Representatives authorized a resolution permitting Prairie Band Casino & Resort, a tribal casino in northeast Kansas, to offer sports wagering. This development could pave the way for the casino to provide sports betting by the end of summer.
The Kansas Legislature’s approval of sports betting at Prairie Band Casino & Resort marks a significant milestone for the tribal casino. With the amended gaming compact in place, the casino is well-positioned to offer sports wagering on-site and through app partnerships, potentially launching by the end of summer.
Senate and House Votes on the Resolution
The Kansas Senate voted 27-8 in favor of SR 1725, a resolution amending the gaming compact with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation to include sports betting. In a similar move, the House of Representatives voted 93-27 to approve its version of the resolution, HR 6026, completing the agreement’s legislative approval.
Details of the New Compact
According to the resolution, the amended compact enables Prairie Band Casino to offer sports betting on-site or through app partnerships. However, players using the apps will only be allowed to wager within the tribe’s reservation. The joint committee unanimously voted to adopt the compact amendments during Thursday’s meeting.
Background on the Compact Amendments
Zach Pahmahmie, Tribal Counsel Vice Chair, explained in an interview that the original gaming compacts did not permit any of the four tribes in Kansas to participate in sports wagering. To move forward, it was necessary to change the language in the original compact.
