Hippos ATG Secures Finnish Licence Ahead Of July 2027 Launch

Hippos ATG Oy has secured a Finnish gambling licence covering horse racing, sports betting and online casino games. The company plans to begin operations when the competitive market opens on July 1, 2027.

Good To Know

  • Swedish operator ATG and Suomen Hippos each own 50% of the venture.
  • The company plans to direct 60% of profits to Finnish horse racing and breeding.
  • Licence approval does not permit gambling operations before July 2027.

The profit distribution model gives Finnish horse racing a financial stake in the new business. Suomen Hippos represents harness racing and horse breeding, while AB Trav och Galopp brings operating experience from Sweden since 1974 and Denmark since 2019.

Chief Executive Officer Mikael Bäcke said preparations have included responsible gambling procedures, anti-money laundering controls, information security, technical compliance and risk management. Following the October 19 approval, the company will concentrate on its products and operational readiness.

Finland Opens Betting While Retaining Some Monopolies

The new Gambling Act will allow licensed competitors into sports betting, online casino games, online slots and online bingo. However, Veikkaus will retain exclusive rights over lotteries, scratch cards, physical slot machines and land-based casino games.

The National Police Board handles applications during the transition. The Finnish Supervisory Agency will take over licensing and supervision in July 2027.

The reform therefore opens selected gambling categories to competition rather than ending the monopoly across every product.
