Stake Canada plans to launch its online casino and sportsbook in Alberta on October 12 after receiving regulatory approval from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis. The timing puts Stake one day ahead of the final October 13 transition deadline for operators leaving the unregulated Alberta iGaming market.
Good to Know
Stake Canada received approval from AGLC on October 6 after first appearing as a registered operator in late September. An October 12 launch remains dependent on completing an operating agreement with Alberta iGaming Corporation, or AiGC.
Alberta separates those two roles. AGLC regulates online gambling and registers operators, while AiGC handles commercial agreements, financial reporting and other market functions. Operators need both AGLC registration and an AiGC agreement to legally operate an Alberta online casino or sportsbook.
Birgitte Sand, a Stake Canada board member, said:
“Stake Canada’s approach to regulated market-entry is grounded in preparation, accountability and a long-term commitment to compliance. Securing licensing in Alberta provides a strong foundation for the company’s development in Canada and reflects the importance we place on meeting local standards and player safety.”
Stake will enter a market that has grown quickly since July. Alberta opened with 22 regulated sites, while roughly 35 were operating by October 5. FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM and Betway are among the brands already competing for Alberta online casino and sports betting customers.
Before regulation, the Alberta government estimated that about 70% of online gambling activity took place through unregulated platforms. Under the new system, Alberta retains 20% of net iGaming revenue, while operators receive 80% after allocations for First Nations initiatives and social responsibility programs.
Stake Canada manager Kris Abbott said:
“Our planned entry into Alberta represents an exciting milestone step for us in Canada – we are not here to blend in. We are here to raise the bar and bring the distinctive Stake experience to Alberta’s highly engaged player audience.”
The Alberta launch will give Stake a regulated Canadian base for its casino and sportsbook products. Stake already operates in regulated markets including Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Denmark and Italy. Canadian rapper Drake also has a long-running marketing partnership with the gaming brand.
Stake Canada expects to launch on October 12, 2026, subject to completing its operating agreement with AiGC.
Stake Canada has received conditional registration from AGLC. Alberta operators also need an AiGC commercial agreement before accepting wagers.
Alberta opened its regulated iGaming market on July 13, 2026, becoming the second Canadian province after Ontario to operate an open regulated online gambling market.
