Las Vegas Hotel Occupancy Falls Despite Cheapest Rates Of 2026

Las Vegas hotels cut average room rates to the lowest level of 2026 in August, but lower prices failed to prevent another decline in tourism.

Good to Know

  • Las Vegas welcomed 3.03 million visitors in August, down 4.3% from a year earlier.
  • Average hotel rates fell to $150.32, while occupancy dropped to 74.1%.
  • Nevada gaming win still increased 3.1% during the month.

Cheaper Las Vegas Rooms Fail To Lift Occupancy

Hotel operators lowered the citywide average daily rate to $150.32 in August, around $7 below July. However, occupancy fell 3.4 percentage points year on year to 74.1%, according to Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority data. LVCVA publishes monthly tourism indicators covering visitation, hotel performance, conventions and transport.

The weakness centered on weekdays. Midweek occupancy reached 69.4%, compared with 85.5% during weekends.

Hotel revenue felt the impact as well. Revenue per available room fell 11.5% to $111.39, while occupied room nights dropped by 134,400 to 3.46 million.

Results also varied sharply by location. Las Vegas Strip hotels averaged $153.15 per night with occupancy of 77%. Downtown Las Vegas recorded a much lower $85.68 rate, but occupancy reached only 53%.

Lower tourism numbers did not produce the same result inside Nevada casinos. Statewide gaming win increased 3.1% in August even as Las Vegas visitor volume declined. Nevada Gaming Control Board data for August was released on September 30.

Airport Traffic Adds To Las Vegas Tourism Weakness

Harry Reid International Airport handled just over 4.1 million passengers in August, down 9% from August 2025. The airport had handled more than 4.4 million passengers in July.

Domestic traffic fell 10.2%. Southwest Airlines remained the largest carrier with 1.75 million passengers, down 4.6%, while Delta Air Lines traffic fell 8.8% to 393,403.

Frontier Airlines went in the opposite direction. Passenger volume increased 35.3% to 436,475 as the airline picked up traffic following the closure of Spirit Airlines in May.

Convention business offered one stronger part of the August results. Attendance increased 6% to 622,700, helped by events including Def Con 2026, Black Hat, MAGIC Fall 2026, SuperZoo 2026 and CHAMPS Trade Show Summer 2026.

Across the first eight months of 2026, both domestic and international passenger totals at Harry Reid International Airport remained around 7% below the comparable 2025 period.
