Royal Caribbean Tests $100,000 Digital Lottery on Utopia of the Seas

Royal Caribbean is testing digital scratch-off lottery tickets through its mobile app aboard Utopia of the Seas, giving passengers another way to gamble without visiting Casino Royale. Tickets cost between $2 and $20, with a maximum prize of $100,000.

Good to Know

  • Utopia of the Seas is currently the only Royal Caribbean ship offering the digital lottery.
  • Scratch-off tickets range from $2 to $20.
  • Prizes of $2,000 or less go directly into the passenger onboard account.

Royal Caribbean Tests Mobile Lottery at Sea

The pilot gives Royal Caribbean a relatively simple way to add mobile gaming without introducing full online casino or sportsbook products.

Passengers can buy digital scratch-offs through the Royal Caribbean app. Anyone winning more than $2,000 must visit the Casino Royale cashier and complete the required tax paperwork before collecting the prize. Royal Caribbean is expected to add the product to more ships if the Utopia of the Seas test performs well.

The new game also replaces Paradise Lotto, a lottery product Royal Caribbean offered before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Royal Caribbean already has a large casino offering aboard Utopia of the Seas, with two casino areas listed among the entertainment options on the ship. The digital lottery adds an app-based product alongside those physical gaming spaces rather than replacing them.

Cruise operators have tried broader digital gambling before. BetMGM and Carnival Corporation announced a 2022 agreement covering mobile and retail sports betting plus iGaming across more than 50 US-based ships operated by Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises.

Royal Caribbean is taking a narrower approach with scratch-off tickets. Lottery games do not require the same constant live pricing and data updates as in-play sports betting, making them better suited to a cruise environment where internet quality can vary.

Carnival has also added lottery gaming, giving the cruise sector another digital format alongside traditional slot machines and table games.
