Macau authorities say coordinated action by police and casino operators has contained a recent group of alleged telephone betting cases inside casino venues.
Good to Know
The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau met representatives from all six Macau casino concessionaires to review how properties detect mobile phone assisted betting.
The talks followed alleged cases where people streamed casino play and placed wagers for customers outside the venue. Reported activity involved live baccarat tables and electronic baccarat terminals linked to live multi games.
Secretary for Security Chan Tsz King said casino staff and police officers stationed at gaming properties identified and curbed the activity quickly. He described the current situation as “under control” and said most cases appeared isolated from one another. Investigations remain active.
Proxy betting creates a compliance problem because the person providing instructions or money may never enter the casino. Mobile streaming can also hide the identity and source of funds behind a wager, which raises anti-money laundering and player verification concerns.
DICJ said it would continue working with the Judiciary Police and casino operators to protect compliance across the Macau gaming market. Telephone and online betting through local casinos are not permitted under Macau rules.
