Coolbet Leaves Alberta Before Regulated Market Opens

Coolbet will stop offering sportsbook and online casino products in Alberta on July 12, one day before the province opens its regulated iGaming market to private operators.

Good to know

  • Alberta regulated sports betting and online casino launch on July 13, 2026.
  • Coolbet has stopped new deposits, registrations, bonuses and promotions in the province.
  • Players can withdraw funds until August 31, but account access ends on September 1.

Coolbet Steps Away Before Alberta Opens The Door

Coolbet has chosen not to join Alberta regulated launch, at least for now. The operator has not announced any plan to apply for a provincial licence, and customers have already received account wind-down instructions.

The timing says plenty. Alberta will become Canada second open iGaming market after Ontario, with licensed private operators allowed to offer sports betting and online casino from July 13. AGLC confirmed the launch date earlier this year, and DraftKings has said it intends to go live on that date if approvals are in place.

Coolbet will shut its Alberta gaming products on July 12. Current users can still log in and withdraw balances through August 31. From September 1, customers will no longer have account access. Although nothing has been communicated, it is likely that the operator is acting in good faith and will return to apply for a gaming licence.

“We strongly encourage you to withdraw your funds as soon as possible,” Coolbet said to customers. “Any bonus funds will be fully unlocked from wagering requirements on July 6th, and you will be able to withdraw your remaining balance.”

Unsettled bets will not all receive the same treatment. Any bet still open on July 12 will be voided and refunded, including parlays. In combo bets, undecided legs will be voided and priced at 1.00.

World Cup bets sit outside that rule. Coolbet said those wagers, including futures, will settle as normal. The World Cup final takes place on July 19.

Alberta Gives Licensed Brands A Clean Run

Alberta wants to pull online gambling activity away from the grey market and into a licensed system. The province aims to bring 70% of gaming activity under regulation by the end of 2026, according to the launch plan cited by operators and market watchers.

Major brands already line up for the new market. FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, theScore Bet, bet365 and other operators have prepared for the July 13 opening. A May update said 28 operators had registered for Alberta launch, including DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, theScore Bet and PointsBet.

That creates the kind of price and bonus fight Coolbet has seen before. The operator left Ontario in April 2023, about a year after that province opened regulated iGaming. Coolbet said at the time that heavy promotional competition and a weak route to profit made the market unattractive.

Alberta now becomes the second regulated Canadian market Coolbet has exited.

Coolbet has not been a small unknown brand in Canada. The operator worked in the grey market for several years and signed marketing partnerships with the PGA of Canada and Olympic medalist Andre De Grasse.

Ownership has also changed since the Ontario exit. GAN Ltd owned Coolbet at that time, but Sega Sammy Holdings bought GAN in May 2025. Coolbet remains based in Estonia and also holds gaming licences in Sweden and Malta.

For Alberta players, the immediate message is simple enough: withdraw funds before August 31, check any open bets, and expect the licensed market to replace grey-market access from July 13.
