Herndon has put a proposed Northern Virginia casino project on hold after local opposition grew around a downtown site near the Metro corridor.
Good to Know
A casino near downtown Herndon now looks far less likely after town officials advanced a resolution aimed at blocking gaming development near the Metro corridor.
The Planning Commission backed the restriction Monday night, following strong community feedback against a casino in the Northern Virginia town. Mayor Keven LeBlanc said many residents argued that a casino would not fit the character of Herndon.
Comstock had been tied to the proposed development on valuable downtown land. Local officials had earlier reviewed zoning language that would have allowed a casino only inside a larger mixed-use project with a hotel, retail space, and conference facilities near the Herndon Metro station.
That path has now narrowed. The project sits on hold while the town works through the next step. The Planning Commission action is not final, and the Herndon Town Council still needs to take a formal vote before the casino restriction can become local law.
Land control may become the harder fight. Comstock still holds the deed, but town officials argue they may have a right to reclaim the property if the development no longer matches the community plan for the area. That disagreement could end up in court.
LeBlanc told Patch that Herndon began looking at code changes in January to protect the long-term development plan around the Metro station. He said the town process had already started before Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger vetoed a bill that would have allowed a Fairfax County casino, including one in nearby Tysons.
For now, the Herndon casino proposal faces two barriers at once: a possible local ban and a growing dispute over who controls the future of the land.
