The Malta Gaming Authority has alerted gaming licensees to a European Union consultation process tied to new anti money laundering standards. The consultation forms part of broader EU efforts to strengthen anti money laundering oversight across financial and non financial industries, including gaming.
Good to Know
The Malta Gaming Authority informed authorized operators and industry stakeholders that the EU Anti Money Laundering Authority AMLA launched open consultations on three draft Regulatory Technical Standards connected to the European anti money laundering framework.
These consultations relate to regulatory measures that will apply to non financial sectors alongside traditional financial institutions. Gaming operators fall within that category, which makes the consultation process relevant for license holders operating under the Malta regulator.
European policymakers continue working toward a more unified anti money laundering system across the region. The consultation phase forms part of that broader legislative effort as authorities refine rules designed to strengthen risk monitoring and compliance obligations across industries.
Three separate draft Regulatory Technical Standards sit at the center of the consultation process.
One draft standard under Article 28(1) of the Anti Money Laundering Regulation Regulation EU 2024 1624 focuses on customer due diligence requirements. Another draft standard under Article 19(9) of the same regulation addresses how businesses identify ongoing relationships, occasional transactions, linked transactions, and thresholds for monitoring activity.
A third draft standard under Article 53(10) of the Anti Money Laundering Directive Directive EU 2024 1640 relates to how organizations must report material weaknesses connected to compliance systems.
The Malta Gaming Authority said the consultation stage holds importance for the gaming sector because the new EU Anti Money Laundering Authority has begun examining rules affecting non financial industries.
Industry participants therefore have an opportunity to review the draft technical standards and provide feedback directly to EU authorities.
Two deadlines apply to the consultation process. Responses connected to the draft standard under Article 53(10) of AMLD6 must be submitted by March 9, 2026. Feedback related to the draft standards under Articles 28(1) and 19(9) must be submitted by May 8, 2026.
The Malta Gaming Authority encouraged license holders and other stakeholders to review the draft standards carefully and submit comments through the consultation portals operated by AMLA.
According to the regulator, early engagement from the industry can help ensure that final technical standards remain proportionate and appropriately calibrated for sectors such as gaming where risk profiles differ from those in traditional banking environments.
The Authority also stated that it remains available to discuss sector specific concerns with authorized operators. License holders may share written feedback with the regulator as part of ongoing dialogue while the EU legislative process continues.
