Major casino groups in Macau have introduced longer paid parental leave benefits starting March 1, aligning employment policies with broader demographic and workforce priorities in the region.
Good to Know
Five of the six gaming concessionaires confirmed changes effective Sunday. Companies implementing the 90 day maternity leave include Sands China Ltd, Wynn Macau Ltd, Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, MGM China Holdings Ltd, and Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd. Four of those groups require a minimum of one year employment to qualify for the enhanced benefit.
Paternity leave also expands. Sands China Ltd, Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, MGM China Holdings Ltd, and Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd will increase paid paternity leave from five days to seven days. Wynn Macau Ltd noted that seven days of paid paternity leave had already been introduced in 2018 as a pioneering move within the local gaming sector.
Wynn Macau Ltd stated:
“The company believes that these enhanced maternity and paternity benefits will further promote a family-friendly corporate culture, provide more comprehensive support for parents welcoming newborns, and help team members achieve a more meaningful balance between work and family life.”
Galaxy Entertainment Group highlighted ongoing internal initiatives beyond leave duration. The company said:
“over the years” it had been “committed to promoting a family friendly workplace through a variety of initiatives,” including “comfortable breastfeeding facilities in back-of-house areas,” for new mothers returning to the workplace.
Galaxy Entertainment added:
“Galaxy Entertainment will continue to review and enhance employee benefits in line with Macau social development needs, fostering a more harmonious and supportive work culture.”
MGM China Holdings Ltd referenced alignment with public policy direction. Wendy Yu, executive vice president of human resources, said:
“MGM continues to cultivate a supportive, caring, and family-friendly workplace for our team members, while actively responding to and supporting the [Macau] Special Administrative Region government fertility-related policies through practical initiatives.”
Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd also linked the adjustment to broader employee wellbeing goals. Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, chairman and chief executive, said:
“We are deeply committed to providing an exceptional working environment, and we are pleased to offer these enhanced maternity and paternity benefits as part of our core family-friendly policies.
“We will continue striving to be an employer of choice by supporting our colleagues in achieving a healthy balance between work, family, and personal wellbeing.”
