Commercial gaming revenue in the United States reached a new high in 2025, totaling $78.72B, according to American Gaming Association data. Tax contributions tied to that activity rose to $18.09B, reflecting a 15.1 percent increase year over year.
Results show continued expansion across casino gaming, sports betting, and iGaming in all 38 commercial jurisdictions.
Good to Know
Traditional casino gaming remained the largest segment, generating $50.94B in revenue, a 2.3 percent increase. That activity produced $11.33B in tax payments, up 7.2 percent from the prior year.
Sports betting delivered some of the fastest gains. Revenue rose 22.8 percent to $16.96B on a $166.94B handle, which itself increased 11.0 percent year over year. State regulated sportsbooks generated $3.71B in taxes, a 32.4 percent jump compared with 2024.
Online casino gaming continued its rapid trajectory. iGaming revenue grew 27.6 percent to $10.74B while contributing $2.59B in taxes, representing a 36.9 percent increase.
“For another year, legal commercial gaming in the United States has delivered exceptional results for consumers, operators, and the communities we serve,” said Bill Miller, President and CEO of the American Gaming Association.
Tax proceeds from regulated gaming support public programs such as education funding, infrastructure investment, and local services across multiple states, according to the association.
Industry leaders also pointed to emerging competition from prediction market platforms offering sports related contracts outside traditional gaming frameworks. Those products, regulated at the federal level rather than by states or tribes, have drawn increasing attention from regulators and lawmakers.
“These platforms operate without state oversight, are not subject to the same consumer protection and responsible gaming standards, and do not contribute tax revenue,” AGA said.
The association estimates that more than $500M in potential sports betting tax revenue has shifted toward prediction market operators so far.
“These record revenues and tax contributions demonstrate the broad appeal of regulated gaming markets and why strong state oversight remains essential as our industry evolves,” Miller said.
“With 2025 marking another record year, the industry’s performance reinforces a clear principle,” Miller added. “Sports betting belongs under state and tribal regulation. That’s how consumers are protected and how communities share in the benefits.”
