Wynn Macau Closes Poker Room

Wynn Macau has shut down its poker room, another signal of how the game continues to face uneven traction in Macau despite pockets of revenue growth.

Good to Know

  • Wynn Macau closed its poker room in late January, reducing active venues in Macau to three.
  • Remaining rooms operate at Venetian Macao, MGM Cotai, and Wynn Palace Cotai.
  • Poker revenue rose in 2025, yet long term participation and tournament activity remain unstable.

Poker once played a role in attracting younger visitors to casino floors across Macau, but momentum has faded over recent years. Closures at MGM Macau and Grand Lisboa Palace last year already narrowed the market, and the latest shutdown further concentrates activity into a small number of properties.

Pandemic disruption continues to cast a long shadow. Many venues struggled to rebuild consistent player traffic after extended COVID related shutdowns, and some never returned to earlier operating levels even as tourism recovered.

Revenue figures tell a mixed story. Data from the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau showed poker generated $121 million in 2025, the strongest result since 2008 and a 10.4% increase from 2024. Quarterly performance also reached a high point during 2025, including $30.3 million in the first quarter.

Long term volatility, however, remains clear when viewed over several years. Macau recorded $55.4 million in poker revenue during 2019 before collapsing to only $4.3 million in 2020 as travel halted and casino operations stalled.

Tournament poker has faced even greater challenges. Large scale events did not return to Macau until 2024 following the pandemic period. A planned World Poker Tour stop scheduled that year ultimately did not take place, highlighting the difficulty international organizers face when attempting to reenter the market.

Regulatory structure has created another barrier. Current concession rules restrict casino operators from sharing revenue with third parties, a model commonly used to host major poker brands and tournament series. Industry observers believe that limitation makes it harder to structure partnerships that once brought high profile events and professional players to Macau.

Fewer marquee events mean fewer reasons for casual players to engage, which can weaken ecosystem growth even when headline revenue occasionally rises.

Comparable fluctuations have appeared in other global markets. Las Vegas has also seen a cycle of poker room closures followed by selective reopenings. Green Valley Ranch shut its room in 2020 before introducing a new facility later, while Planet Hollywood closed in 2021, reopened in May 2025, then closed again in January of this year, reflecting how operators continue testing demand rather than committing long term space.
