A new national hotline number is rolling out across the United States as gambling access keeps widening and more people seek help earlier rather than later. The National Council on Problem Gambling aims to make support faster to find and easier to remember, without changing how care is delivered.
Good to Know
Calls to the National Problem Gambling Hotline can now go through 1-800-MY-RESET, a newly launched number designed for recall rather than memorization. The National Council on Problem Gambling confirmed that the long-standing hotline number, 1-800-522-4700, will continue operating alongside the new option.
Both numbers connect callers to the same nationwide network of trained professionals. Text support also remains available through 800GAM, and online access continues at www.1800myreset.org.
Behind the change sits a broader effort to make problem gambling help visible earlier in the decision cycle, not only at moments of crisis. The council plans to expand supporting resources tied to the new number through 2026 and 2027, with public awareness remaining the central focus.
“With gambling now more accessible than ever, the National Problem Gambling Helpline is a critical lifeline,” said NCPG executive director Heather L. Maurer, MA, CAE. “Making the number easier to remember helps ensure people across the country can quickly connect with high-quality, confidential support when they need it.”
Nearly 20 million adults in the United States reported at least one indicator of gambling harm during the past year, according to data cited by the National Council on Problem Gambling. That figure includes people at many stages, from early concern to ongoing difficulty.
The updated number aims to reduce friction at the moment someone decides to reach out. Shorter recall time often matters more than awareness campaigns when decisions happen quickly, especially for families or friends looking for guidance on behalf of someone else.
The helpline operates as a neutral service. The council does not advocate for or against legalized gaming, focusing instead on harm reduction, education, and referral to local resources.
Adoption of 1-800-MY-RESET will vary by state due to existing regulatory requirements tied to gambling advertising and public health messaging. Some jurisdictions require formal approval before hotline updates appear on regulated platforms.
The National Council on Problem Gambling confirmed ongoing coordination with regulators, operators, state affiliates, and public health partners to encourage adoption where allowed. Promotion of the new number will continue even in states that still display the legacy hotline.
“NCPG will continue working collaboratively with regulators, operators, state affiliates, and public health partners to strengthen problem gambling safeguards,” the organization said in a public statement.
The National Problem Gambling Helpline functions as a 24 hour, seven day network supported by 24 contact centers across the country. Calls, texts, and online chats route to trained specialists who provide confidential assistance without judgment.
Support can include immediate conversation, assessment, and referral to local treatment or counseling services. People can reach out for personal concerns, family worries, or general questions about gambling behavior and risk.
“Problem gambling support should never be limited to a single moment or a single definition of harm,” said Derek Longmeier, president of the NCPG board of directors. “1-800-MY-RESET reinforces that the National Problem Gambling Helpline is available at any stage – whether someone is worried about themselves, concerned about a family member, or simply looking for trusted guidance. Making the Helpline number easier to remember is a practical, meaningful step toward reducing barriers to care.”
