Netflix Starts Production on Korean Casino Crime Series The Dealer

Netflix confirmed production is underway on The Dealer, a Korean crime drama developed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The series shifts focus from survival games to the gambling world, using casinos as the backdrop for crime and personal conflict.

According to the official Netflix logline, “The Dealer is a crime drama series that follows Geonhwa, a brilliant casino dealer whose wedding plans suddenly fall apart, forcing her to unleash her long-hidden powers and plunge into the dangerous world of gambling, in order to successfully make it down the aisle.”

Jung So-min leads the cast as Geonhwa, an experienced casino dealer who has kept distance from the darker side of gambling. After a housing scam disrupts her wedding plans, Geonhwa enters the criminal underworld and relies on supernatural abilities to survive.

The cast also includes Ryoo Seung-bum as Hwang Chisu, a gambler facing financial desperation who becomes involved in Geonhwa plan. Lee Soo-hyuk plays Jo Jun, a highly skilled casino player known for his sharp instincts. Ryu Kyung-soo appears as Choi Wooseung, a relentless detective who also happens to be Geonhwa fiancé.

Choi Young-hwan directs The Dealer in his first project as a director. Choi previously worked as a cinematographer on Smugglers, Veteran, Tazza The High Rollers, and The Thieves, building a reputation for gritty crime visuals.

Hwang Dong-hyuk joins the project as a producer. Firstman Studio, the production company behind Squid Game, is producing the series for Netflix.

The new drama arrives as Netflix continues to lean into Korean content following the global impact of Squid Game. Released in September 2021, the series became the most watched non English show in Netflix history.

Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3 now rank second and third on the same global list. The series also became the first non English television show to win Emmy Awards.
