A slot jackpot dispute has surfaced at Ballys temporary casino Chicago, where a player says staff refused to release his winnings because of immigration status. The case raises questions around identification rules and payout procedures at newly opened gaming properties.
The player says he had previously collected jackpots at the same casino without issue using the same form of identification.

Nick, whose last name was withheld by CBS News, said Ballys did not release a $1,250 slot jackpot he won at the temporary casino location.
Nick said he is seeking asylum in the United States and had no issues collecting winnings from a jackpot hit on December 20. He said the recent denial marked a sudden change in treatment.
“I’ve been a regular since they opened, and I’ve won 11 jackpots, I believe, in the past and never had any problems,” he said.
Nick said he presented a Real ID issued by the state of Illinois. Illinois provides limited-term Real IDs to immigrants who are in the country legally, including those requesting asylum.
Nick said Ballys staff declined to process the payout despite accepting the same ID in the past.
“I haven’t received any of my $1,250 in winnings or been offered an explanation,” he said. “This time, however, they decided to not pay off because of my limited-term ID, and I’ve always had that kind of ID. It would mean a lot … especially now for the holidays.”
Gaming consultant Elihu Feustel told CBS News that the limited-term Real ID should have been acceptable under standard casino payout procedures.
“His limited-term ID is issued to people who are not residents of the US but are here temporarily – in his case, requesting asylum – and as we discussed, it’s more difficult and more stringent to get that than it is to get a regular REAL ID driver’s license,” Feustel said.
Nick said attempts to resolve the issue have not produced results so far. Ballys has not issued a public statement addressing the incident or clarifying its payout policy related to limited-term identification.
The casino cited the players limited-term Real ID as the reason.
