Netflix is moving ahead with a new dramatic series centered on modern Las Vegas casinos, backed by one of the strongest creative pairings in entertainment. The platform has brought together Martin Scorsese with Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the writing team behind Rounders and Billions, to build an eight-episode look at today high-pressure, high-profile casino landscape.
Good to Know
The new series aims to capture the pace, tension and personality-driven environment of the modern casino business. Deadline described it as a story set inside “the high-stakes, sharp-elbowed, present-day Las Vegas casino business, which is a modernized but still dangerous version of the legendary city.” At the center is Robert Bobby Red Redman, the president of a top hotel casino who must take bold steps to keep his role secure and push for more influence.
Koppelman and Levien bring extensive experience in character-driven dramas. They developed Billions for Showtime and wrote Rounders, which remains a benchmark poker film for many players. Their involvement signals Netflix interest in building a premium series with authentic industry detail and the kind of sharp dialogue the duo is known for.
Scorsese joins the project through Sikelia Productions. He previously found success on Netflix with the 2019 film The Irishman. The creative roster also includes producing partner Paul Schiff, Julie and Rick Yorn with Expanded Media and former Billions writer-producer Beth Schacter. According to Deadline, the Yorns initially approached Netflix with a more historical concept before the project evolved into a modern take after the platform brought in Koppelman and Levien.
Netflix has not provided a start date for production or a release timeline.
The revival of interest in Rounders continues to surface as the poker world has changed dramatically since the film release in 1998. Matt Damon recently noted that he is open to a sequel and has discussed the idea with Levien and Koppelman. He said on the Rich Eisen Show: “
The one we’ve been talking about for years, and we’re trying to, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, like all of us want to do … a second ‘Rounders’ movie.”
Damon added:
“So much has happened in the poker world in the last 25 years. It would be fun to catch up with those guys.”
