Alberta is advancing its plan for a competitive online gambling framework by opening applications for seats on the board that will guide the province new internet gaming corporation. The move represents a core step toward building a regulated market for online sports wagering and casino gaming.
Good to Know
The province created the Alberta iGaming Corporation, known as AiGC, through legislation passed earlier in the year. The new corporation will act as the legal and operational vehicle through which Alberta runs its future online sports betting and iGaming market.
A public recruitment posting describes AiGC as the entity responsible for work to “develop, undertake, organize, conduct, and manage online lottery on behalf of the Government of Alberta.” Additional language in the posting outlines the corporation goals to support a responsible, competitive, and sustainable market while maintaining consumer protection and revenue generation for the province.
Applications for AiGC board positions are open until December 10. The provincial government intends to appoint five members, including a chair and vice-chair. These appointments will form the governance foundation for market oversight and approval processes tied to upcoming private-sector partnerships.
Government officials view the recruitment push as evidence that the province broader online gambling initiative is progressing. Alberta plans to introduce a regulated market that includes private operators capable of offering online sports wagering, slots, and table games. Industry leaders such as DraftKings and FanDuel are viewed as likely participants once the regulatory structure is formalized.
Before contracts with private operators can be executed, AiGC must be fully established. The corporation will manage the agreements that outline operator obligations to the province, covering issues such as compliance, responsible gaming standards, and platform conduct.
Alberta iGaming minister Dale Nally said the government continues to consult with stakeholders to finalize the market foundation. He said:
“Conversations are ongoing and cover a wide range of topics, including the development of the province regulatory framework, the implementation of player safety measures like system wide self-exclusion, and the registration process with Alberta iGaming market regulator – Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis. An interim CEO will soon be appointed to complete the work necessary to finish standing up the Alberta iGaming Corporation. Once the organization is stood up, a CEO will be recruited to manage and oversee the operations of the Alberta iGaming Corporation.”
Nally noted that regulations may be completed soon and that additional details regarding AiGC are expected in early 2026.
