Authorities in Argentina raided the home of popular content creator Joaquín “Joaco” López as part of an ongoing probe into alleged promotion of unauthorized online gambling platforms.
Good to Know
The search, approved by Criminal and Contraventional Court No. 4, was led by prosecutor Juan Rozas. Investigators targeted López’s home to seize digital devices and any material that could serve as evidence in the case.
Officials allege that López leveraged his massive online following to advertise and promote an unlicensed online casino, even offering financial incentives to drive user signups and betting activity. According to the investigation, he ignored repeated warnings from regulators to stop posting gambling-related content.
López had already been questioned twice before—once in November 2024 and again in April 2025—after authorities notified him to halt any promotional activity linked to gambling. Despite that, he continued to feature gambling-related content on his social media channels and livestreams.
Following the raid, López actually responded with humor on X, writing:
“Good morning, I just woke up and my computer’s gone, did anyone see it?”
Under Argentinian law, Article 301 bis of the Penal Code strictly prohibits the organization, operation, or promotion of unlicensed gambling. Violators can face prison sentences ranging from three to six years, as well as asset seizures and fines.
López became one of Argentina’s most-followed streamers during the pandemic, known for gaming content and collaborations with other influencers. His growing fame, however, has drawn scrutiny from authorities who are increasingly monitoring online figures promoting betting platforms that operate without approval.
Legal experts say López’s case reflects a broader enforcement trend: regulators are stepping up action against influencers who profit from unlicensed gambling promotion. With online betting continuing to grow across Latin America, Argentina’s government has sought to protect consumers and ensure that all operators meet national licensing and taxation requirements.
