The Senate of Argentina is preparing to reopen debate on a long-stalled bill that targets gambling addiction prevention and sets rules for online betting. Lawmakers will gather in a joint session involving the Health, General Legislation, and Justice and Criminal Affairs committees to evaluate the proposal, which already cleared the Chamber of Deputies.
Good to Know
So far, discussion has taken place only within the Health Committee. Lucía Corpacci, who chairs the committee, urged colleagues to move the project forward, stressing that delay could result in the bill losing parliamentary status. She acknowledged that changes to the text may be needed but emphasized that ignoring the issue would be unacceptable.
In addition to the main bill, Senators from across party lines have submitted around 18 other initiatives. While the scope of these proposals differs, they share the goal of creating prevention measures, consumer protections, and regulatory frameworks that address the fast-growing gambling and online betting market.
Argentina has already seen action at the local level. In Rosario, city officials recently rolled out a program focused on early intervention and prevention of gambling addiction. That initiative reflects a broader trend of rising public concern and adds momentum for national lawmakers to move forward with comprehensive regulation.
