Maryland Lottery and Gaming has released a new set of educational videos focused on responsible play. The four-part “Mindful Gambling” campaign was created with the Maryland State Ad Agency and the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling to highlight risks and point players toward support resources.
Good to know
The campaign arrives during Responsible Gaming Education Month, but leaders stressed the work goes far beyond a single awareness push.
John Martin, Director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming, said:
“Emphasizing responsible play will always be an important part of our work. We’re eager to draw attention to the video series in conjunction with Responsible Gaming Education Month. But this is a year-round endeavor for us.”
Each video is designed for audiences identified as being more vulnerable to gambling harm. To build trust, the series features peer counselors from the Center of Excellence who speak openly about their own challenges with gambling.
Jasmine Countess, the Lottery’s Responsible Gambling Program Director, explained the approach:
“We wanted to create messages that raised awareness about some of the groups who are most at risk of gambling-related harm. The Center’s peer counselors are an excellent resource and have a lot of useful knowledge to share.”
For William Hinman, a peer support specialist and supervisor at the Center, the personal connection is essential:
“People who call the helpline may see gambling as a financial solution or an escape from difficulties in their life. We can relate because we’ve been there, so we start by sharing some of our own experiences so they know they aren’t alone or being judged.”
The videos are now live on the Responsible Play section of the Lottery’s website, alongside “Fact or Myth?” features and links to local and national helplines.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming has consistently ranked among the leaders in responsible gambling certification. Between 2015 and 2022, it advanced through all four levels of the World Lottery Association program, which sets global standards for player protection. In April 2025, the Lottery also achieved the highest level of the Responsible Gambling Verification Program, managed by the National Council on Problem Gambling and the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
