What began as a night of apparent jackpot joy for hundreds of Gala Bingo players ended in disappointment after a technical fault wiped out what they thought were legitimate winnings.
Good to know
On August 4, alerts went out to players during the Summer Nights Bingo event, telling them they had hit a share of a £1.6 million jackpot. Some logged in to find hundreds — even thousands — of pounds in their accounts. Social media lit up with screenshots, some showing balances over £2,000.
Gala Bingo later admitted that a system malfunction during the event had incorrectly credited all participating players as jackpot winners. The company cited its terms and conditions, which allow voiding any payouts caused by a malfunction.
In a statement, the operator apologized and said: “We understand how disappointing this is and have contacted all affected players directly. A goodwill gesture has been offered in recognition of the inconvenience.”
For many, the reversal came after they had already started making plans.
Emma Wills, a 34-year-old mother of three from London, said she was credited with £920 and immediately began budgeting for treats for her children, paying off debts, and putting money toward a car. “It was such a shock to find out it was all a mistake,” she told reporters.
Adam Wall was credited three separate times for a total of £7,200, which he withdrew with plans to help pay for his wedding. The next day, his account was locked and the funds removed. “I felt frustrated, disappointed, and deeply upset,” he said, after being told the money was the result of a glitch.
The scale of the incident sparked wider outrage. More than 170 affected players joined a Facebook group called “Justice for Gala Victims” to share their stories and organize complaints.
Gala Bingo confirmed it has reported the matter to the UK Gambling Commission. Alongside the £20 goodwill credit, the company says it is reviewing the event’s technical systems to prevent similar failures.
