Online gaming might soon feel a lot safer. PlaySafe ID has teamed up with Entrust to introduce a secure identity system aimed at reducing cheating, fraud, and toxic behavior in digital game environments. By combining Entrust’s identity verification tools with PlaySafe’s anonymised ID system, the partnership wants to build a gaming experience where players can have fun without worrying about bots or bad actors.
Good to know
Players who sign up for PlaySafe ID will go through a short verification process using Entrust’s platform. All it takes is a snapshot of a government-issued ID and a short video selfie. The system checks if the ID is legit and then matches it to the person in the video. If everything checks out, the gamer gets a unique PlaySafe ID—random, anonymised, and not linked to any personal data during gameplay.
That means users stay anonymous while gaming, but can still trust that their opponents and teammates are also real humans—not bots, not banned users, and not fraudsters using stolen IDs.
Andrew Wailes, CEO of PlaySafe ID, said the collaboration is about creating a better digital gaming environment. “Gaming should be fun, fair, and safe for everyone,” he said. “Our partnership with Entrust ensures that our user verification process is both secure and scalable, and also aligns with the values of frictionless user experience and privacy.”
This effort is also timed to help game companies comply with new rules. The UK’s Online Safety Act includes the Protection of Children Codes that kick in by July 2025. These codes will require platforms to actively reduce risks and limit harmful content for underage users.
Samuel Steg, Head of Compliance for Identity Verification at Entrust, pointed out the larger issue:
“Fraudulent activity online continues to grow both in scope and sophistication, and gaming environments are no exception. Our identity verification technology provides robust, high-assurance Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, offering gamers a seamless and secure onboarding experience.”
