GAMSTOP has seen a sharp rise in users so far in 2025, with a record number of people signing up to block themselves from online gambling. Registrations jumped 19% in the first half of the year, driven mostly by younger users aged 16 to 24.
In April, monthly sign-ups hit five figures for the first time, reaching 10,281. That record was broken just one month later in May, when 10,344 new users joined the scheme. The service hit its single-day peak on April 7, just after the Grand National, with 437 registrations in 24 hours.
Good to know
The six-month self-exclusion option has become increasingly popular, especially among younger users. So far in 2025, 39% of 16–24-year-olds have chosen the six-month period, up from 33% over the platform’s full history. Many appear to be using GAMSTOP as a short-term preventive step rather than a last resort.
Still, the five-year maximum ban remains the top choice overall. Across all age groups, 47% of users in 2025 picked it. Since GAMSTOP’s launch in 2018, 53% of all users have opted for the full five-year exclusion. In response to user feedback, a five-year auto-renewal option was introduced in December 2024. Take-up has been strong, with nearly half of all recent five-year users selecting it.
Breakdown of new users in the first half of 2025 shows clear trends:
Despite the increase in shorter exclusions, the long-term bans still dominate for older age groups, with nearly 60% of those aged 45 and above selecting the five-year option.
As GAMSTOP usage continues to grow, the group has announced a leadership change. Chris Pond will become the new chair this September, taking over from Jenny Watson CBE, who has served in the role since GAMSTOP’s early days. Pond brings decades of experience in financial services, public policy, and nonprofit leadership, currently chairing both the Financial Services Consumer Panel and the Money and Mental Health Advisory Board.
Fiona Palmer, CEO of GAMSTOP, commented:
“Our data shows a significant spike in the number of younger consumers who are GAMstopping to manage their gambling, and this has driven the record registrations in 2025. They are increasingly choosing six-month exclusions, which suggests that GAMSTOP is being used as a tool to allow them a break from gambling. We have worked very hard to increase awareness of GAMSTOP amongst younger consumers and to destigmatise the use of self-exclusion. We want them to realise that GAMSTOP can be used as a preventative tool alongside other solutions, giving them breathing space to take back control.”
