Robert Wells Wins First WSOP Bracelet in $3,000 Nine Game Mix

On the eve of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship, Robert Wells secured a major win in one of the World Series of Poker’s toughest formats. The Welsh player came out on top in Event #58: $3,000 Nine Game Mix, earning his first bracelet and a career-high payout of $228,115 after outlasting a 409-player field.

Good to know

  • Robert Wells won the $3,000 Nine Game Mix for $228,115.
  • Both Wells and runner-up Thomas Taylor had finished second in previous WSOP events.
  • The win came just one day before the start of the $50,000 Poker Players Championship.

Wells had come painfully close in 2024 with two second-place finishes in a span of 11 days. This time, he went all the way, defeating Thomas Taylor heads-up for the title. Taylor, coincidentally, also had his own streak of second-place finishes, including one just last week in the $1,500 H.O.R.S.E. event.

“I came second twice last year, so I know that pain on the other side, so being on this side of it is amazing,” Wells said after the win. “If I could have picked any tournament to win, this would probably be two on the list, besides the PPC.”

Path Through a Deep Field

The tournament drew 409 entries and included a long list of experienced pros. On the final day, 18 players returned with hopes of grabbing the title. Among them were big names like defending champion Yuri Dzivielevski, Jeff Madsen, and David Bach.

Wells made a move just before the final table began, winning a critical hand against Philip Sternheimer in no-limit deuce-to-seven single draw. From there, he stayed consistent, collecting chips across multiple game formats as the final eight played down to the finish.

Taylor took control during a stretch of big pots and entered heads-up play with a lead. But after a short break, Wells turned things around in no-limit hold’em and then pulled ahead during seven card stud eight-or-better. A key moment came when Wells made trips in one hand and two-pair in another to take a strong lead.

It ended, fittingly, in another deuce-to-seven single draw hand. Wells stood pat with a 10-7 low, while Taylor paired up during his draw and had to settle for second place.
