Carlos Leiva Wins First WSOP Bracelet in Event #42: $1,000 PLO

Carlos Leiva has officially added a World Series of Poker gold bracelet to his career, winning Event #42: $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha. After years of competing on the live circuit, the Argentinian player came out on top of a 1,932-entry field and took home $237,852—the second-largest score of his career.

Good to know

  • Leiva now has over $1 million in career tournament earnings.
  • The event generated a prize pool of more than $1.7 million.
  • Several former champions and poker pros finished in the money.

Leiva led the final seven players coming into the last day of the tournament and kept that lead all the way to the end. He eliminated multiple opponents and held his ground through tough competition, including two-time bracelet winner Dylan Weisman and former main event finalist Eric Buchman.

The $1,000 PLO event attracted a large field, producing a top-heavy payout structure. In total, 290 players made it into the money, with notables like Mike Leah, Ryan Riess, Robert Cowen, and others running deep. The depth of talent made the final table run even more meaningful for Leiva.

Quick action in the closing hands

At three-handed play, Leiva knocked out Brian McKain after McKain failed to improve against Leiva’s made straight. From there, Leiva held a commanding lead heading into heads-up play against Hooman Nikzad.

In the final hand, both players committed their chips on a draw-heavy flop. Nikzad momentarily moved ahead with a queen-high straight on the turn, but Leiva hit a king-high straight on the river to seal the win. Nikzad walked away with $158,481, his second-best cash behind a 2007 Bellagio victory.
