Elaine Wynn’s impact stretched far beyond the gaming and hospitality industries. She worked closely with Communities In Schools, a national nonprofit helping at-risk students. Under her leadership as Chairwoman, the organization expanded to support over 1.7 million students across nearly 3,000 schools in 26 states.
Wynn also took on key roles in education reform within Nevada. In 2011, she co-chaired the state’s Blue Ribbon Education Reform Task Force, which helped pass meaningful legislative changes. She served on the Nevada State Board of Education and was elected as its president twice.
Wynn Resorts added, “She was a tireless advocate for Las Vegas, for children and their education, and for the arts. We’re grateful that the enduring sense of philanthropy she instilled in our company continues to this day.”
Honoring Elaine Wynn
After her death was made public, messages poured in from across Nevada. Mayor Shelley Berkley shared a personal note, recalling Wynn’s influence dating back to her own time as a student at UNLV. “All of Las Vegas is saddened by the loss of Elaine Wynn,” she said.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo also commented. “Not only was Elaine a visionary Las Vegas businesswoman, but she was an unparalleled philanthropist with a deep love for improving education and bettering her community.”
Congresswoman Susie Lee spoke of both personal admiration and professional respect. “Elaine was not only my dear friend but also an important mentor,” she said. “Her philanthropy touched the lives of millions.”
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas also reflected on Wynn’s decades of support. She served on the UNLV Foundation Board from 1983 to 2008, including a six-year run as Chair. In 2008, she was named a trustee emerita.
Chris Heavey, UNLV’s Officer in Charge, said, “Her advocacy for UNLV and education at all levels in Las Vegas could be seen in her dedication and generosity.” He also highlighted Wynn’s role in raising millions for the school over the years.
Wynn had partnered with the city on the future Las Vegas Museum of Art. “Her spirit, creativity and caring nature will live on,” Heavey added.
Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro remembered Wynn’s broader community impact. “Elaine Wynn was an inspirational, pioneering woman,” she said. “Her impact was felt in the community for decades and will continue to be felt for many years to come.”
Tributes also came in from other public figures and organizations including Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert, Boys Town Nevada, and Myron Martin, CEO of The Smith Center.
Elaine Wynn’s legacy spans hospitality, education, and philanthropy. Her leadership helped shape both the skyline of Las Vegas and the futures of countless students.
