By shutting down 72 unapproved websites that operate in the city, Buenos Aires authorities have stepped up their efforts to combat unlawful online gambling. This action comes after a significant crackdown in September 2024 that resulted in the closure of over 200 illicit gaming websites.
The most recent operation was coordinated by the Buenos Aires City Lottery (LOTBA) and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Gambling. Important evidence supporting these platforms’ illegal activity was found during their inquiry.
Regulatory Action and Statements
The President of LOTBA, Jesús Acevedo, reaffirmed the organization’s exclusive authority over gambling operations in Buenos Aires. “We are the only authority that can grant legal authorizations to legally operate games of chance in the City of Buenos Aires,” he stated.
Acevedo also emphasized the broader impact of these actions, noting that they contribute to responsible gaming and the prevention of underage gambling. “This operation is added to the awareness and combat actions that we permanently promote to encourage Responsible Gaming and prevent child gambling,” he added.
Authorities in Buenos Aires have greatly intensified their efforts to combat illicit internet gambling since 2023. More than 330 illegal gambling websites have been shut by the city thus far.
Regulators have targeted social media promotions in addition to shutting down websites. More than 1,600 profiles and ads connected to illicit gambling have been removed by authorities. Furthermore, 48 influencers and celebrities have come under fire for using their social media platforms to advertise illegal gaming sites.
Buenos Aires’ dedication to overseeing the online gambling industry, guaranteeing adherence, and shielding customers from unauthorized operators is demonstrated by this continuous enforcement.
