Alaska Considers Mobile Sports Betting with New Legislation

In an effort to legalize and control mobile sports betting throughout Alaska, Representative David Nelson has submitted House Bill 145. If approved, the bill would allow for a maximum of ten one-year mobile wagering licenses. A $100,000 cost would be paid by license holders, and there might be additional processing fees for new applications or renewals.

The regulated market would be supervised by the Alaska Department of Revenue. In order to make sure operators follow state regulations, Commissioner Adam Crum would have the power to grant and renew licenses.

Compliance and Monitoring Requirements

To maintain transparency, HB 145 mandates that licensed operators implement software to monitor betting activity. This system would flag any irregularities, which operators must report to Commissioner Crum. Such measures aim to ensure fair play and protect consumers.

Additionally, the bill prohibits promoting mobile sports betting to individuals under 21. Operators must also provide resources addressing gambling disorders on their platforms, promoting responsible gaming practices.

The proposed law would impose an adjusted gross revenue tax of 20% on licensed operators. The goal of this taxation approach is to support prudent regulation while bringing in state revenue. By January 1, 2026, if authorized, Alaska might begin offering regulated mobile sports betting.

Notably, the bill only addresses mobile sports betting and leaves out provisions for daily fantasy sports (DFS). The House Finance and Labor & Commerce Committees have been asked to take a closer look at the measure.

Alaska is in a position to join other states that have legalized sports betting thanks to Representative Nelson’s plan. Stakeholders will monitor how the state develops its gaming environment as talks continue.
