The development of the Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia has formally begun thanks to the efforts of Bruce Smith Enterprise and Cordish Companies. The goal of this $1.4 billion project is to boost the local economy by building a thriving mixed-use resort in Petersburg.
NFL Hall-of-Famer Bruce Smith, the founder of Bruce Smith Enterprise, highlighted his enthusiasm for the project. “For far too long people have simply driven by the City of Petersburg, but today marks the beginning of a new era in which Petersburg will become a prime destination,” Smith said.
He added that the resort will generate jobs, attract tourism, and provide greater economic opportunities for local families. City officials and business leaders joined the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate this major milestone.
Community Impact and Job Creation
Petersburg’s economy is anticipated to be significantly impacted by the resort. Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia is scheduled to open in 2027 and will provide top-notch gaming and entertainment. By the end of 2025, a temporary gaming facility will also open, generating vendor possibilities and about 500 jobs.
Zed Smith, COO of Cordish Companies, emphasized the project’s long-term benefits. “Live! Casino & Hotel will be a transformative development that will bring a world-class gaming and entertainment experience to millions of visitors, create significant new jobs and generate millions of dollars in economic benefits for the community that will provide a beneficial impact for generations.”
The project will be owned, developed, and managed by Petersburg Community Development Investors and its affiliates. Licensing approvals from Virginia’s regulatory agencies, including the Virginia Lottery, are required before the casino can officially operate.
Alongside Virginia State Senator Lashrecse Aird and State Delegate Kim Taylor, city leaders attended the groundbreaking, including Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham. Their backing demonstrates how crucial the project is to reviving the area and fostering sustainable growth.
The city is poised to become a regional hub for entertainment, hospitality, and economic development with Live! Casino & Hotel Virginia. Petersburg locals and visitors may anticipate a flourishing new center in Central Virginia as the work moves underway.
